Callewaert Vanlangendonck Gallery is pleased to present Albert Rubens (Tielt, °1944) during the Antwerp Art Weekend.
The art critic Jaak Fontier called Rubens the antipode of lyricism. Any form of representation is eliminated and only lines and planes without any form of subject remain. The serial aspect of his oeuvre and the thinking that precedes it incline Rubens's efforts to conceptual art and to the ideas of François Morellet, with whom Rubens maintained a friendship. Together with Vasarelly and Le Parc, Rubens founded the group GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel). Albert Rubens' art is a thoughtful universe of purely geometric experiences.

These group of avant-garde artists founded "Art Abstrait” in 1952. After 1945, Belgium experienced the emergence of a new generation of artists who continued to develop the language and boundaries of abstract art. Both geometric forms and the more lyrical, poetic or expressionist abstraction were further explored by them. Some stayed true to their style, others kept searching for new forms of expression. This evolution eventually led to minimalism, where form and color were reduced to their absolute minimum.
