TICK TACK

TICK TACK proudly presents a solo exhibition of Belgian visionary artist Liliane Vertessen (1952) debuting new and in-situ works in dialogue with older key works.

Liliane Vertessen is considered a pioneer artist in using her own outward appearance as an artistic medium. Since the beginning of her career, now spanning over 5 decades, Vertessen developed a remarkably personal vision by shaping photographs to her own ends and using them as a starting point for her multimedia installations.

Vertessen portrays herself in a variety of poses that are erotically charged and highly staged. She experiments with a wide spectrum of roles in which women are so often depicted: seductress, lady, sex object, prostitute and innocent little girl. These roles are presented for consideration, as objects of both celebration and criticism; however, there is often an element of melancholy that pervades her works. They are reminiscent of images from the past, imbued with poetic intensity and power that exudes authenticity.

The work of Vertessen was subject of many exhibitions including MDD, Deurle (1983), PCBK (duo-show with Cindy Sherman), Hasselt (1986), S.M.A.K., Ghent (1989), Museum Fridericianum, Kassel (1989), NAK, Aachen (1991), MuHKA, Antwerp (1992, 1996), Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Oostende (1996, 2001), Museum Dr. Guislain, Ghent (2004), Verbeke Foundation, Kemzeke (2009), CC, Hasselt (2012), Musée de la Photographie, Charleroi (2018).
